When Scarlett Grows Up

One of the few things Dan and I don’t agree on when it comes to child rearing is what they can and can’t listen to musically speaking. He is constantly telling me we shouldn’t let them listen to pop music, that we should only buy them Kidz Bop or other kid-friendly CDs. I’m from camp “they don’t understand 90% of what they are hearing”, but after this recent revelation, I’m forced to admit that he may be right.

Little Miss Scarlett was quietly listening to my iPhone, when she suddenly takes off the headphones and says “Mommy, when I grow up, I need a bicycle, star earrings, things to cover my boobies and no shirt.” I grab the phone to see she is listening to “When I Grow Up” by the Pussycat Dolls. Of course it doesn’t help that the iPhone shows the cover art for the songs … which is where Scarlett got her fashion ideas from.

So, where do you stand? Do you think pop music is too suggestive for young kids?

Oh, Anabella

What has Anabella been up to lately? Just the usual …

Showing just how grown-up she is becoming, by putting incredible mommy guilt on me for taking a work trip over Valentine’s Day …

(It says: “Dear Ronda: You weren’t here so I made you a Valentine’s day card. Love Anabella”)

Yes, now I am Rhonda instead of mommy. And I think she even misspelled my name on purpose. Everyone knows how much I hate that!

And she has been having some creative differences with her art teacher …

Oops? Sometimes I feel the school system has no appreciation for kids who think outside the box. Apparently Anabella was into body paint rather than painting on paper that day. Maybe she is hoping to get into Blue Man Group.

Who knew Disney would be so awesome?

When Dan suggested we bring the girls to Disney for a week, I was “eh” on the idea. We drove (so dreading that was a huge part of the lack of excitement) 15 hours to Orlando, but even that wound up being kind of fun. And now that we have been here for a week, I have to admit it is one of the best ideas Dan has ever had. 😉

The girls have been in HEAVEN the entire time. Meeting all the princesses and characters. Going on silly rides, watching little shows and parades, eating horribly unhealthy things … this is little kid Mecca.

Here are a few photos. More when we get back.

It’s going to be an X-rated Halloween

Anabella and I recently went to my friend Kathy’s house for a playdate … kind of a last hoo-rah before first grade started last week. Everyone at Kathy’s house is crazy about Halloween, so her daughter Lauren pulls out some catalogs to look at Halloween costumes. I am flipping though a catalog, with Anabella looking over my shoulder, when I come to this:

Anabella slams her finger down on the page, “I want to be that for Halloween!” she said. “But what is it?”

“It’s a peacock,” I said.

“A pink COCK?” Turns to Lauren. “I’m going to be a PINK COCK for Halloween.”

Of course, if I was a grown up, I would have corrected her calmly and that would have been that. But no. Kathy and I look at each other and bust out laughing so hard we were crying. Anabella begins repeating herself because this is oh-so funny.

And then, completely ignoring the children and thinking only of the first week discipline reports that came home from kindergarten, I turn to Kathy and say “Hi, I’m going as a PINK COCK for Halloween.” More hysterical laughing followed until we finally regained composure and tried to repair the situation by sounding out PEA-COCK to Anabella several times.

Luckily the pink cock joke didn’t rear it’s head (hahaha … get it?) again.

Then of course I find out this isn’t a peacock after all, but a flamingo.

WTF? Wednesday

Just when I thought my girls were being sweeter and kinder to each other, Anabella presents me with this drawing.

Background: Scarlett somehow wound up wearing one of Anabella’s “Hello Kitty” shirts the other day, and all hell broke loose (picture crying, throwing of self on floor and other ridiculousness).

As you can see in this drawing, Anabella (the blonde) is wearing the coveted HK shirt. And poor Scarlett, standing next to me, is crying, being rained on by bowling-ball sized drops, has a very ominous red cloud following her (is it toxic??!), and apparently also has a club foot.

Ahh, sisters. So glad I don’t have any.

P.S. NOLA recap coming ASAP!

WTF? Wednesday

It’s WTF Wednesday and I’m sure all wondering WTF is up me. Well, the short version is that I’ve been really sick. Crohn’s is kicking my ass again … more than ever before. I’ve been on crazy meds, losing my hair, missing work, feeling like total ass all the time. And in between that, I’ve trying to participate in my life. So that left no time for blogging. Or laundry. Or porn. Anyway, I’m back on evil steriods and starting to feel a little better, so here I am.

Everyone else is great. Scarlett is still talking trash and acting like the Queen Bee, which I totally adore. Anabella is really taking off in school — writing, reading and getting blue stars all the time (instead of yellow sad faces). She also experienced her first “staycation” over spring break, but she was able to do a lot of fun things like Space Center Houston with her grammy and Matt. Dan and I took her to the rodeo carnival (she is a total daredevil, just like her mommy) and she spent a few hours working at my office one day. Remember when you thought it was cool and fun to go to work? Yeah, me either.

So here are a few photos. And I promise to get back in the blogging saddle ASAP.

P.S. Anabella lost her third tooth at the Rodeo while eating an ice cream cone. It was on the tip of her tongue and I managed to snatch it before she swallowed it. FINALLY the tooth fairy got to make a visit!

Sliding with daddy at the rodeo.

Hanging out in princesses dresses … ALL day in the princesses dresses, even out to lunch!

Happy holidays!

Hey everyone! Thanks for all the notes and offers of help during what was an incredibly trying time. Dan has mostly recovered, and so has Scarlett (did I mention here that she wound up with pneumonia too?), so hopefully life will get back to normal next week when school starts again.

Christmas was great. Even though I only had a week to buy all the gifts, wrap everything, decorate the house and do the shopping for Christmas lunch, somehow it all came together and the day was very — merry. And even though I have been off work for nine days, things haven’t been too tense, except for the occasional fight-to-the-death between Anabella and Scarlett. (are sisters always like this??) However, it appears that a few of Dan’s little “sayings” have rubbed off on my otherwise nearly perfect little three-year-old child during all the quality time we have spent together.

I am laying in bed and Scarlett is next to me watching a cartoon. She notices that I am on my cell phone and says “Mommy, I want to play my mouse game.”

Me: “I’m on the phone right now, but you can play when I am done.”

Scarlett (with a very serious face): “If you don’t let me play my mouse game, I am going to smack your ass.”

Nice job, daddy. Can’t wait until she pulls that out in school next week.

Halloween – a little late.

Here they are — SuperGirl and Minnie Mouse.

We had some friends come over to go trick-or-treating with us — mostly princesses. All adorable.

A good time was had by all.

P.S. Am I the only person who is so over the high school kids who go trick-or-treating with no costume and a plastic grocery store bag?!
